After five years of near silence as a band, Nine Inch Nails are back—with a vengeance. Their latest offering, TRON: Ares (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), is more than a return to form—it’s a sonic upheaval. Dropping September 19 via Interscope Records, the album marks the first time Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have released a film score under the Nine Inch Nails banner, though the duo has scored more than 20 films and television projects under their own names, collecting Oscars, GRAMMYs, Golden Globes, and an Emmy along the way.
But TRON: Ares is different.
Created for the third installment in Disney’s cult-favorite sci-fi saga, the soundtrack rejects cinematic convention. There are no orchestras here—just the mechanical pulse of synths, the warped edges of industrial noise, and melodies that bleed with melancholy. In an exclusive interview with Empire, Reznor explained why this one had to come from Nine Inch Nails, not as composers for hire, but as a band with something visceral to say.
Today, fans got their first taste: the single “As Alive As You Need Me To Be” is out now, paired with a visualizer and featured in the just-released TRON: Ares trailer. The track builds like a transmission from a collapsing digital world, evoking both the haunted introspection of The Fragile and the searing momentum of With Teeth.
The full tracklist remains under wraps, but the announcement comes as Nine Inch Nails prepare to launch the sold-out North American leg of their Peel It Back world tour. Kicking off August 6 in Oakland, the 26-date arena run includes double-night stops in Chicago, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles. German techno powerhouse Boys Noize will open each night. With European reviews already raving about the tour’s dystopian grandeur—The Times calling it “a revelation” and Kerrang hailing it as “mind-blowing”—North American fans are bracing for impact. Limited view tickets for all shows will be released July 18 at 9AM PT via NIN.com.
Since founding Nine Inch Nails in 1988, Reznor has redefined the boundaries of rock, industrial, and electronic music. From the cult classic Pretty Hate Machine to the chart-topping The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, NIN has never stood still. Their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 felt more like a checkpoint than a culmination.
Meanwhile, Reznor and Ross have spent the past decade shaping the sound of modern cinema. Their score for The Social Network reinvented what a film soundtrack could be. Since then, they’ve added HBO’s Watchmen, Pixar’s Soul, Fincher’s Mank and The Killer, and Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All and Challengers to their résumé.
This November, the pair will further celebrate their legacy with Future Ruins, a one-day festival curated by Reznor and Ross in Los Angeles, spotlighting composers who’ve redefined film and television scoring. Think less background music, more main event—full orchestra sets and immersive performances, with tickets available now at FutureRuins.com.
With TRON: Ares, Nine Inch Nails are tearing down yet another wall between art rock and cinema. The film hits theaters October 10, but if the new single is any indication, this soundtrack might be the real main event.
