Slayyyter
Slayyyter, the unapologetic hyperpop provocateur, has officially signed with Barry Weiss’ joint venture label, Records, in partnership with Columbia Records, marking a major new chapter in her music career. The announcement, made on Friday, was accompanied by the release of her latest single, “Beat Up Chanel$,” a loud and chaotic electro-punk track that fully encapsulates Slayyyter’s ability to blend emotional vulnerability with raw, hyper-real moments.
The Missouri-born artist first broke out with her self-titled 2019 mixtape Slayyyter, a collection of brash, Y2K-influenced bangers that celebrated internet culture, sex, and self-empowerment with gleeful abandon. Her 2021 debut studio album Troubled Paradise pushed her sound further, marrying glitchy pop production with themes of heartbreak, insecurity, and fame. By the time she released Starfucker in 2023—her critically acclaimed, sleazy-glam sophomore album inspired by Hollywood decay and nightlife excess—Slayyyter had fully solidified her place as one of the most provocative voices in hyperpop and underground pop.
In a statement to Variety, Slayyyter expressed her excitement for the future, saying, “So grateful to start this next chapter of music with Columbia and Records. They understand my vision fully, and I’m excited for people to see everything we’ve been working on. It feels nice to have found a new home for my music.” With “Beat Up Chanel$,” it’s clear that this next chapter is bound to be even more intense than the last.
The new single is an intoxicating sonic cocktail—loud, messy, and filled with emotional dissonance. With glitchy beats, sharp electronic sounds, and lyrics that effortlessly flick between self-indulgent flexing and feelings of emotional emptiness, the song feels like a fever dream that you can’t quite wake up from. Slayyyter sings about flashing designer labels, motel party scenes, and those numb nights that turn into wild memories, but amidst the noise, there’s a quiet, poignant moment when she sings, “I want something for real.” It’s a fleeting line, but it’s this contradiction—the desire for authenticity amidst a world of superficial excess—that perfectly encapsulates the feeling at the core of the song.
The music video, which was co-directed by Slayyyter herself, doubles down on the chaotic aesthetic of the track. Filled with flashing lights, gritty dirt, and a broken sense of glamour, the visuals evoke the energy of a half-remembered night—vivid yet fragmented. Slayyyter is seen dancing by a trailer in someone’s backyard, with grown men fighting, working out, and shooting guns in the background. The whole scene feels like a moment frozen in time, reflecting the track’s themes of living in a constant state of confusion and excess.
In discussing the inspiration behind “Beat Up Chanel$,” Slayyyter reflected on her teenage years, noting that the song is a nod to her younger self. “I used to hang out in parking lots, watch boys at skateparks, dye my hair purple, and dream about things I couldn’t have,” she says. “Now that I’m 28, I look back and realize not much has changed. It’s still chaos, just a different version of it.”
For Slayyyter, the transition from her earlier DIY, bedroom-pop releases to a more polished yet still fiercely independent sound seems like a natural evolution. But her essence remains intact: a commitment to raw self-expression, a willingness to push boundaries, and an unflinching honesty about the messiness of modern life.
With a new label, new single, and a fresh creative vision, Slayyyter is stepping into her next era with all the chaotic energy and rebellious spirit that made her an icon in the hyperpop scene. The question now is: where will she take us next?
If “Beat Up Chanel$” is any indication, the ride will be unpredictable, electrifying, and impossibly real.
