Adam Boyd
With his new single “What You Really Needed,” the South African-born artist bridges nostalgia and evolution.
South African-born musician Adam Boyd is emerging from a decade-long hiatus to make a striking entrance as a solo artist with his debut single, “What You Really Needed.” Widely recognized as the former frontman of the alternative rock band Wake to Wonder, Boyd spent years navigating life’s twists — moving to the UK, becoming a father, and building a new life far from the stage. Yet through it all, music remained his constant companion, quietly shaping his growth and perspective.
Now, with his first solo release, Boyd channels years of experience into songs that are at once raw yet deeply relatable. “What You Really Needed” fuses the anthemic energy fans remember from his band days with a more introspective tone, signaling a new creative chapter. Rooted in his South African heritage but shaped by his international experiences, Boyd’s music speaks to the universal journey of searching and ultimately discovering what truly matters.
Indie Sound: Adam, it’s been over a decade since your last solo project. What’s it like to finally release something solo again after such a long break?
Adam: This is actually my first ever solo release. Back in South Africa I was fronting Wake to Wonder, but going solo is something I’d always wanted to do. Life took me on a different path for a while — moving to the UK, becoming a father, and building a new life. Once things settled, I bought a second-hand Mac, taught myself Logic Pro, and started recording. This release represents years of persistence and growth, so to finally share it feels incredibly rewarding.
Indie Sound: “What You Really Needed” blends indie and rock influences, while maintaining the anthemic sound from your days with Wake to Wonder. What kind of musical evolution have you gone through over the past years, and how does this track represent that?
Adam: I wanted this first single to feel familiar to fans of Wake to Wonder, almost like a bridge from then to now. My taste has evolved over the years, but there’s still a piece of that old sound in me that resonates. This track carries that DNA, but it’s also a launchpad for the darker and more introspective music that’s coming next.
Indie Sound: You’ve mentioned that future releases might head in a darker, more introspective direction. Can you tell us a bit about what listeners can expect from your upcoming work?
Adam: The next songs explore heavier themes — loss of friends, losing my parents, and the process of growing into adulthood. They’re more reflective and emotional, but also honest. Each one has its own flavour, but together they tell a story about life, loss, and resilience.
Indie Sound: Even though you’re now based in the UK, you’ve said this song is rooted in South Africa. How have your South African influences shaped your music over the years?
Adam: South Africa will always be home, no matter where I live. Growing up, my biggest influences were South African bands, and they shaped the sound I gravitated towards. That foundation has always stayed with me, and it’s a big part of why I wanted this first video to be shot in Cape Town with South African talent.
Indie Sound: The music video was shot in Cape Town with some amazing local talent. How did this collaboration come about, and what’s the story behind the video?
Adam: I’d wanted to work with Marlon du Plooy for years — he’s an incredible filmmaker. When it came time to release new music, he was the first person I called. We developed the concept together and brought in a local cast, including Sybrand Nortje, who also appeared in Wake to Wonder’s final video Built for Better Days. It felt symbolic — starting this solo chapter where the band left off.
Indie Sound: Who or what are the key musical influences that shaped “What You Really Needed”? Were there any particular artists or moments that inspired this track?
Adam: The main influence was life itself. Every experience of loss forces you to look deeper at what matters. This song, and much of the music I’m writing now, comes from that space of questioning, reflecting, and observing the world around me.
Indie Sound: What was the process like for creating this song? Did you have a clear vision going into the studio, or did the track evolve organically?
Adam: It started with the guitar riff — that was the seed. From there, the lyrics and story evolved naturally. It wasn’t over-planned, it just grew into what it is now.
Indie Sound: You worked with some incredible talents, like Marlon du Plooy for the video and Dave Law for mixing/mastering. How did these collaborations help bring your vision to life?
Adam: Dave Law is an amazing engineer and a close friend. He’s the perfect sounding board when I’m working through ideas, and he makes sure everything I release sounds the way it should. Marlon and his brother Keaton are just as brilliant in the film world. I always say your network is your net worth, and I’m fortunate to have such talented people in my circle.
Indie Sound: This song seems quite personal. Can you tell us what the inspiration behind the track is? Is it based on a specific moment or feeling in your life?
Adam: It’s actually about four different characters, each living very different lives but all searching for something. The irony is that what they thought they wanted wasn’t what they truly needed. It’s about how life often surprises us by giving us what we didn’t even realize we were searching for — and sometimes the perfect life we see from the outside isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s a look at the human condition.
Indie Sound: With the release of “What You Really Needed,” are there any plans to take this solo material on the road? Will fans see you performing live again anytime soon?
Adam: No tour plans just yet — right now I’m focused on building my online presence and sharing music this way. Live shows will definitely come in the future, but this stage is about reconnecting with listeners worldwide.
Indie Sound: As the former frontman of Wake to Wonder, how does it feel to step out as a solo artist now? Do you still carry that band’s influence with you, or has this new project allowed you to explore a different side of yourself?
Adam: I’ll always carry pieces of Wake to Wonder with me, but this project gives me complete creative freedom. I’m not tied to a genre or anyone else’s expectations — I can follow wherever my imagination takes me. That freedom is really exciting.
Indie Sound: How do you think your long-time fans from Wake to Wonder will respond to this new direction in your music? Do you think they’ll recognize your style in this new solo work?
Adam: I think they’ll feel a sense of nostalgia in this first track, because it has that same anthemic quality. But I also hope they’ll embrace the darker, more experimental direction I’m heading in. It’s still me — just a more evolved version.
Indie Sound: Looking forward, what can we expect next from you? Are there any major goals you’re aiming for with your solo career, or do you plan to keep things more organic and intuitive?
Adam: My plan is to release another three songs and at least two more videos in the near future. Beyond that, I’m keeping it organic — seeing where the music takes me and allowing the journey to unfold naturally.
Indie Sound: Finally, what’s the message you hope listeners take away from “What You Really Needed”?
Adam: To pause and appreciate life. To step outside yourself and see the world through the eyes of the people who love you. Sometimes what we think we want isn’t what we actually need — and the real gift is realizing that.
