Elmiene
British-Sudanese soul sensation Elmiene is laying his soul bare. On the 5th of December, the artist, widely celebrated for his “vintage voice” (NPR Tiny Desk) and “masterclass in modern R&B” (CLASH Magazine), drops his most vulnerable work to date: the single and accompanying video, “Cry Against The Wind,” out now via Polydor / Def Jam Recordings.
The new track is a slow-burn, haunting ballad that eventually swells into a pulse-driven emotional rush. Produced by Andrew Aged—a key collaborator for visionary artists like Mk.gee and Frank Ocean’s Buddy Ross—the song serves as an “unfiltered reflection of grief, guilt, and the complex ache of loving someone who has never quite been within reach,” according to the press release.
“Cry Against The Wind” traces the tumultuous emotional landscape of Elmiene’s evolving relationship with his late father, Jameel. The lyrics are unflinchingly honest, setting a tone of weary, loving tension: “Afraid you’d call again to tell the same old stories / I know I can’t pretend but this back and forth it bores me.”
The emotional gut punch lands with the admission: “…think it’s really real / I hate you, my Jameel / But I’d watch the whole world drown to see you cry again.” The track is a complex, contradictory swirl of apology, resentment, remorse, and, ultimately, deep love.
The cathartic visual for the single is equally striking—set in a dim, wind-torn corridor that visually embodies the emotional storm within the song, Elmiene tackles the narrative head-on as he appears aged up in prosthetics—created by Malina Stearns, Nadia Lee Cohen’s lead special effects makeup artist—disguised as his father, only to switch back to himself, toggling between resistance and yearning in the tumultuous windstorm.
“This song is about crippling guilt,” Elmiene comments. “It’s about a mistake that I know is too late to truly be forgiven for. We all sometimes have to live with things we can’t fix but acknowledging and accepting that is heavy, like a strong wind you can never turn away from.”
“Cry Against The Wind” arrives on the heels of a massive year for the artist. Just yesterday, he debuted the new song at his sold-out O2 Academy Brixton show in London. The single follows the remix EP, Heat The Streets Some Mo’, a re-imagining of his acclaimed Heat The Streets mixtape, which featured heavy hitters like legendary rapper Ghostface Killah, Muni Long, and Jordan Ward.
Elmiene’s star has been steadily rising, powered by a string of high-profile live performances, including a standout set at the BET Awards, a slot at the Roots Picnic, and supporting none other than Stevie Wonder at BST Hyde Park. His iconic NPR Tiny Desk Concert recently surpassed 1 million views, solidifying his stature as a formidable voice in contemporary R&B. Tipped by every major platform from BBC Radio 1 to NME and The Guardian, Elmiene is carving out a lane rooted in soul but reaching for something bigger: timelessness.
With “Cry Against The Wind,” Elmiene is not only delivering another musical masterclass but is opening an emotional conversation that resonates with anyone who has grappled with the complex, often painful, bonds of family.
