The Last Ship
Sting is once again paying tribute to the ghosts and heroes of his youth. On December 5th, the legendary artist released The Last Ship (Expanded Edition), a newly expanded version of his deeply personal 2013 album, now available in digital, CD, and a 2-disc vinyl format.
More than just a reissue, this release is a powerful musical overture for a major international re-staging of The Last Ship musical, in which Sting will return to the stage to reprise his acclaimed starring role as shipyard foreman Jackie White. The new production is set to premiere next year with prestigious engagements in Amsterdam, Paris, Brisbane, and perhaps most notably, at the revered Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
The heart of this expanded edition lies in five newly recorded tracks, which blend Sting’s signature voice with a collection of impressive collaborators and new arrangements that breathe fresh life into the show’s material. These additions underscore the enduring, raw power of the narrative—a tribute to the collapsed shipbuilding industry of his hometown, Wallsend, in northeast England.
The new tracklist additions include:
- “Island of Souls (2025)”
- “Shipyard (feat. Joe Caffrey, Brian Johnson, Jo Lawry)”
- “Ship of State (feat. Renée Fleming)” – A stunning collaboration featuring the iconic soprano Renée Fleming.
- “If You Ever See Me Talking to a Sailor (feat. Frances McNamee)”
- “O’Brien’s Hymn”
The collaboration on “Shipyard” brings together a chorus of voices that directly connects to the musical’s stage history, while the inclusion of Fleming on “Ship of State” suggests an elevated, almost operatic scope for the upcoming international tour.
“I literally grew up in the shadow of the yard,” Sting says. “I dreamed of escaping—and I succeeded. But later I realized I had to give something back. THE LAST SHIP is my tribute to the people and the place that shaped me.”
The Last Ship first debuted on Broadway in 2014, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score, and has since sailed through critical acclaim in productions worldwide. It’s a story rooted in the resilience of a community facing economic devastation, a theme that has only become more relevant over time.
The album’s production boasts a rock-solid foundation, produced by Sting and Rob Mathes, and expertly mixed by Donal Hodgson and four-time GRAMMY Award winner Robert “Hitmixer” Orton. Adding to the depth, the expanded edition features newly written liner notes from playwright Barney Norris, the book writer for the 2026 production, giving fans a deeper look into the creative process shaping the upcoming stage run.
The Last Ship (Expanded Edition) is available now globally.
