Tom Odell
The singer confronts body shame and raw emotions ahead of his upcoming album A Wonderful Life.
Award-winning singer-songwriter Tom Odell has just dropped “Ugly”, a brutally honest single that digs deep into his struggles with self-image and body shame. The powerful, guitar-driven track is a bold exploration of vulnerability, with Odell peeling back the layers to confront feelings that many are reluctant to voice.
In a statement, Odell shared the difficult yet powerful sentiment behind the song. “Something I’ve never really talked about is some of my own weird shame around my body, and it feels so uncomfortable to actually say that in a song,” he confessed. “But when you say it, it’s really fucking powerful.” The track reflects on the paradox of self-perception, touching on the sense of alienation that comes with looking at others seemingly gliding through life with ease. “Ugly” illustrates how the real experience of living is often fraught with emotional turbulence and imperfection.
The accompanying music video complements the track’s themes as the moodily lit video features Odell performing in front of a large monitor, where an overwhelming stream of contrasting comments about the artist and his music flash across the screen. From glowing praise to harsh criticism, the comments emphasize the alienating impact of public opinion and the toll it can take on a performer’s self-esteem. The anonymity of these comments, devoid of any faces, heightens the feeling of disconnect between the artist and the words that haunt him.
“Ugly” is part of Odell’s forthcoming album A Wonderful Life, slated for release on September 5. The track is the third single revealed from the album, following the release of “Don’t Cry, Put Your Head On My Shoulder” and “Don’t Let Me Go,” which Odell performed live on CBS Saturday Morning in a recent interview with Anthony Mason. The English singer-songwriter has previously shared that A Wonderful Life was inspired by the ceaseless, often harrowing news cycle that fills our daily lives, contributing to a pervasive sense that the world is on the brink of collapse. In Odell’s own words, the news delivers “the sense, almost every week, that the world is ending in some capacity – which it is, for some people.
”To support the album, Odell is embarking on a European arena tour, which began in August and will continue with performances across the continent beginning September 29 through December 4. The tour includes stops at some of Europe’s most populated cities, and fans can purchase tickets for the shows now. Odell’s North American tour is set to follow in September.
Fans can pre-order A Wonderful Life now, and with the raw honesty of “Ugly” setting the tone for what’s to come, it’s clear that Odell’s latest project will be an emotionally charged journey through the complexities of life, love, and self-reflection.“Ugly” is available now on all streaming platforms.
