Shorts Vol. 2
Turning seconds into stories — the Bigo & Twigetti collective takes on the challenge of crafting entire worlds in under a minute.
In an age when even the average TikTok clip feels too long, London-based label Bigo & Twigetti is turning brevity into an art form. Their new compilation, Shorts Vol. 2, out now, challenges 14 composers to craft fully realized instrumental pieces lasting under one minute — and the results are proof that you don’t need ten minutes to tell a story.
The follow-up to the label’s 2022 experiment in micro-composition, Shorts Vol. 2 once again pushes its roster of boundary-hopping artists — many of whom bridge modern classical, electronic, and ambient worlds — to distill emotion and atmosphere into a matter of seconds.
Among the highlights are the compilation’s final two singles: “The Dreamgate” by Fiona Brice and “Lulu” by Itoko Toma. Brice, a classically trained composer and violinist known for collaborations with Elbow, Suede, and Placebo, describes her track as “a fluid, trippy instrumental; a brief escape from the strict grid of clicked tempo.” The piece nods to the psychedelic experiments of the ’70s — a swirl of strings and texture that somehow feels expansive, even as it evaporates in under a minute.
Japanese pianist and composer Itoko Toma brings her signature luminous touch to “Lulu.” “I put such sparkling moments into the sound: the fresh morning air, the sea with the morning sun, the sunlight through the trees on the avenue,” she says. The piece unfolds like a fleeting daydream, all delicate piano phrasing and glimmering ambience.
Across Shorts Vol. 2, that same spirit of compression leads to moments of unexpected power. Tracks like Alanna Crouch’s “Sea of Glitter” and Oskar Schuster’s “Daliah” feel cinematic, despite their brevity, while Hior Chronik’s closing piece “Take Me Back” finds a wistful grace in understatement.
It’s a concept that runs counter to the traditional expectations of instrumental music — a genre that usually luxuriates in time and space. But in Shorts Vol. 2, the constraint becomes a creative catalyst, forcing the composers to say more by saying less.
Shorts Vol. 2 is out now via Bigo & Twigetti on all major streaming platforms.
