Varges Thomas has never been content to stay in one musical lane. The Dayton, Ohio native—whose career spans more than four decades—is a self-taught keyboardist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer who first came to prominence as a member of New Horizons, the group produced by the late funk icon Roger Troutman of Zapp. That early mentorship helped shape Thomas’ musicianship and appreciation for authentic groove, laying the foundation for a career that has successfully blended R&B, Funk, Smooth Jazz, and Southern Soul. Over the years, he has remained fiercely independent while building an international audience, with his albums Destiny and Journey reaching listeners in dozens of countries and a string of No. 1 Urban Influencer R&B & Soul chart singles—including If I, Steppers Delight Ladies’ Night, and Sundress & Sandals—solidifying his reputation as one of independent music’s most consistent hitmakers.

Congratulations on the release of “On the Floor.” What inspired this song, and what story were you hoping to tell?
Varges Thomas: The inspiration for the song came from seeing people of all ethnicities come together and free themselves through dance.
The track has a high-energy Southern Soul vibe. What made you want to create a dance anthem at this point in your career?
Varges Thomas: I have always made dance tracks throughout my career with songs like Steppers Delight, Ladies Night, and Juice, all from my first LP.
How does “On the Floor” differ from your previous releases like “Slow Dance” or “Sundress & Sandals”?
Varges Thomas: On the Floor differs because it’s a party dance track with more than enough people on the dance floor at the same time. Compared to Slow Dance and Sundress & Sandals, which are more intimate and centered around two individuals, On the Floor is all about bringing everyone together.
The song celebrates nightlife and steppers’ culture. What is it about that culture that continues to inspire you?
Varges Thomas: Music is an outlet after a hard day’s work. It relaxes and revitalizes your thoughts, giving people a sense of hope.
If listeners could take away one feeling after hearing “On the Floor,” what would you want it to be?
Varges Thomas: I’d love for people to want to learn how to dance if they don’t already know how—lol—and to free themselves by celebrating life while enjoying good, vibing music.
You started teaching yourself keyboards at just ten years old. When did you realize music would become your life’s work?
Varges Thomas: I realized music would be part of my life once I recognized I could create melodies and notes that made me feel good and sounded right. When people responded with smiles and were drawn to what they heard, I knew it was passion at its best.
Growing up in Dayton, Ohio, how did the city’s rich funk history shape your sound?
Varges Thomas: It was the versatility and blend of different genres that shaped my sound.
You were mentored by the legendary Roger Troutman. What are some of the most valuable lessons you learned from him?
Varges Thomas: Be patient, show grace and compassion to others, and have fun while creating and perfecting your craft.
You’ve successfully blended R&B, Smooth Jazz, Funk, and Southern Soul. How do you balance honoring tradition while keeping your music fresh?
Varges Thomas: It’s all about the blend and the feeling—doing what comes to mind and enjoying the vibe and mood while creating something new.
What does your songwriting process typically look like?
Varges Thomas: It usually starts with a little melody, a thought, a hook, and a few lyrics. From there, I build and expand the song.
As a multi-instrumentalist and producer, how involved are you in every stage of creating your music?
Varges Thomas: I am part of every aspect of what you hear. While I sometimes work with other musicians, I am involved in nearly every stage of the creative process.
When you’re producing a record, do you usually begin with the melody, rhythm, lyrics, or something else?
Varges Thomas: All of the above.
How has your production style evolved over the years?
Varges Thomas: It’s evolved by staying in the moment and remaining true to myself and my abilities as both a musician and record producer.
Several of your singles have reached the top of the Urban Influencer R&B & Soul Charts. What does that recognition mean to you?
Varges Thomas: I feel blessed knowing I’m reaching an audience that enjoys what they hear and that my music connects with people of all ethnicities.
Your music has reached listeners around the world. Has the international response surprised you?
Varges Thomas: No. Music is universal and touches the soul of people everywhere.
Looking back on your career, what accomplishment makes you the proudest?
Varges Thomas: The fact that I’m still here, still able to entertain people, and still receiving such a positive response from my fans around the world.
Southern Soul has experienced a major resurgence. Why do you think audiences are reconnecting with the genre?
Varges Thomas: Southern Soul is relatable. People connect to the storylines in the songs and feel like they’re part of the message.
As an independent artist, what have been the biggest rewards and challenges of building your career?
Varges Thomas: The biggest reward is seeing people respond positively to the gifts and talents I share. The biggest challenge is getting some media outlets to appreciate the art itself instead of being so focused on getting paid.
What advice would you give to independent artists trying to establish themselves in today’s music industry?
Varges Thomas: Never quit. Never give up on yourself. Have fun, stay away from drugs and other controlled substances that can ruin your health and well-being, and learn the business side of the industry. Also, don’t get caught up in all the glitter and glamour—follow your passion.
How do you stay creatively inspired after decades in the music business?
Varges Thomas: It’s a burning passion and desire in my spirit to express what’s on my mind and share it in a way that helps others.
Outside of music, what hobbies or interests help you recharge?
Varges Thomas: I enjoy watching NFL football and NBA/WNBA basketball, and I love relaxing and spending time with my family.
What motivates you to continue creating new music?
Varges Thomas: Passion and having a message to share with the world.
Is “On the Floor” part of a larger project, or can fans expect another album soon?
Varges Thomas: Yes. On the Floor will be part of my forthcoming LP.
Are there any dream collaborations you’d love to make happen?
Varges Thomas: Sure, but I’d rather not mention any names. I believe opportunities will present themselves as I continue to work and trust the process.
