Amy Winehouse – Back To Black
Amy Winehouse’s landmark 2006 album returns for its 20th anniversary with four previously unreleased demos, rare recordings, archival photographs, new liner notes, and a live performance captured in Amsterdam in 2007.
Twenty years after Amy Winehouse turned heartbreak, sharp wit, and self-destructive romance into some of the most enduring songs of the 21st century, Back to Black is being revisited with an extensive collection of archival material.
Arriving October 23, 2026, via UMe/Island, the anniversary editions bring together Winehouse’s landmark second album with previously unreleased demos, rare B-sides, alternate recordings, and live performances, alongside archival photography and new reflections from the album’s original producers, Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi. The collection will be available in expanded 3LP clear-vinyl, 3CD, and digital editions, with additional limited-edition vinyl pressings and an Amazon-exclusive CD of the original album.
At the heart of the release are four previously unreleased demos: “I’m No Good,” the original demo of “You Know I’m No Good”; “Fuckery,” the original demo of “Me & Mr Jones”; “Back to Black,” the original demo; and “Love Is a Losing Game,” the original demo. The collection also includes “I’ve Been Drinkin’,” an alternative version of “Just Friends,” and “Tears Dry,” an alternative demo.
Rather than presenting Back to Black as a finished monument, these recordings offer a glimpse into Winehouse’s songwriting process, revealing the material in earlier forms. Her songs could be funny, vicious, romantic, humiliating, and devastating within the same verse, while the finished arrangements sharpened the sense that something messy and painfully human was unfolding beneath the surface.
The expanded editions also gather a substantial collection of B-sides and rarities, including “Do Me Good,” “Close to the Front,” “Monkey Man,” “Hey Little Rich Girl,” and “You’re Wondering Now.” Other highlights include Winehouse’s BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance of “Valerie,” “Cupid,” “To Know Him Is to Love Him,” “You Know I’m No Good” featuring Ghostface Killah, “Rehab (Demo Version),” and “Some Unholy War (Down Tempo).”
The track selection differs between formats. The 3LP edition combines the original 11-track album with B-sides, demos, and 11 selections from Winehouse’s February 8, 2007, concert at Amsterdam’s Paradiso. The 3CD and digital editions include an expanded bonus disc featuring the demos and rarities, followed by the complete 14-track Paradiso performance on the third disc.
The Amsterdam recording is one of the collection’s central attractions. Captured during the Back to Black tour, the concert moves through songs including “Addicted,” “Just Friends,” “Tears Dry on Their Own,” “Cherry,” “Fuck Me Pumps,” “He Can Only Hold Her / Doo Wop (That Thing),” “I Heard Love Is Blind,” “Wake Up Alone,” “Back to Black,” “You Know I’m No Good,” “Me & Mr Jones,” “Rehab,” “Love Is a Losing Game,” and “Valerie.” The complete 14-track performance is included on the 3CD and digital editions, while the 3LP set features 11 tracks from the same show.
The live material offers another perspective on an album often celebrated primarily for its studio production. Working with Ronson and Remi, Winehouse drew on vintage soul, jazz, Motown, Stax, and girl-group traditions, using horn arrangements and layered harmonies to create a sound that felt both timeless and distinctly her own. Yet she was never simply a singer inhabiting a retro aesthetic. Her phrasing pushed against the arrangements, making her performances feel simultaneously theatrical and conversational, wounded and defiant.
The anniversary packaging extends that archival approach—physical editions feature alternative cover artwork, previously unseen photographs by original album photographers Mischa Richter and Alex Lake, and an image from Ronson’s personal archives showing Winehouse’s handwritten lyrics. New liner notes from Ronson and Remi offer personal perspectives on the album’s creation and the creative partnership behind its distinctive sound.
Collectors will also have two limited-edition pressings of the original album to choose from: a Chalkboard Marble colour-vinyl edition and a webstore-exclusive Zoetrope vinyl edition featuring moving footage of Winehouse. Both preserve the original 11-track sequence, from “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good” through “Love Is a Losing Game” and “Addicted,” offering alternative presentations of the original record without the additional archival material.
Originally released on October 27, 2006, Back to Black established Winehouse as one of the defining artists of her generation. Its fusion of classic soul, jazz, and girl-group influences with sharply observed, deeply personal songwriting produced a catalogue of enduring recordings, including “Rehab,” “You Know I’m No Good,” “Back to Black,” “Tears Dry on Their Own,” and “Love Is a Losing Game.”
The album reached No. 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart and became the country’s best-selling album of 2007. According to the anniversary announcement, it has sold more than 4.5 million copies in the UK, earning 15-times Platinum certification, and has received double-Platinum certification from the RIAA in the United States. Worldwide sales have surpassed 25 million copies.
At the 2008 Grammy Awards, Winehouse won five awards: Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Rehab,” Best Pop Vocal Album for Back to Black, Best New Artist, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Rehab.”
Those achievements tell one story; the songs tell another. “Rehab” became an enduring pop-cultural reference, but the album surrounding it was stranger and darker than its biggest single suggested. “Back to Black” transformed romantic abandonment into something approaching funeral music. “You Know I’m No Good” made infidelity sound simultaneously comic and catastrophic. “Love Is a Losing Game” reduced heartbreak to its essentials: voice, melody, and resignation.
Two decades later, Back to Black remains more than a defining album of 2006—its songwriting, production, and emotional candour have become part of the wider musical landscape, continuing to reach new generations of listeners.
