Live Dispatch Vol. 1: Blues for Allah ’26 Arrives November 20, Blending Detroit Jazz, Soul and Funk with the Grateful Dead Songbook

Don Was has spent much of his career moving between musical worlds, from producing landmark recordings for The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt to championing jazz as president of Blue Note Records. A Detroit native whose musical identity was shaped by the city’s rich traditions of jazz, blues, soul and funk, Was has consistently sought out opportunities to bring different musical languages together. His latest project brings those experiences into a deeply personal exploration of one of rock music’s most adventurous catalogs. On November 20, Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble will release Live Dispatch Vol. 1: Blues for Allah ’26, a six-track live album that revisits the Grateful Dead’s landmark 1975 record through the distinctive musical traditions of Detroit.

Recorded during the Ensemble’s 2026 tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of Blues for Allah, the album also serves as a tribute to Bob Weir, Was’ longtime friend, collaborator and fellow member of Wolf Bros. Their musical partnership began in 2018, when Was joined Weir in exploring the Grateful Dead songbook. What started as a series of performances gradually became something more personal, as the songs developed a life beyond their original recordings.

“Playing with Bobby Weir and The Wolf Bros drew me deep into the music of the Grateful Dead,” Was explains. “The songs became way more than lyrics and a chord chart – they became more like ‘friends’ that I looked forward to hanging out with night after night.”

Rather than approaching the material as a straightforward exercise in nostalgia, Was brings together an ensemble whose musical identity is firmly rooted in Detroit’s jazz, blues, soul and funk traditions. The result is a meeting of two distinct musical cultures, with the Grateful Dead’s exploratory compositions finding new dimensions through layered horn arrangements, improvisational passages and deeply grounded rhythms.

The Pan-Detroit Ensemble features Was on bass alongside saxophonist Dave McMurray, drummer Jeff Canady, trombonist Vincent Chandler, vocalist Steffanie Christi’an, trumpeter John Douglas, guitarist Wayne Gerard, percussionist Mahindi Masai and keyboardist Phil Whitfield. Together, they approach the repertoire with an emphasis on collective interplay and musical spontaneity, allowing familiar compositions to develop in unexpected directions.

“There’s a unique sound and feel to Detroit that permeates the music in a way that resonates all over the globe,” Was says. “There’s a rawness, a lack of pretension, and an unmistakable underlying groove that reflects the people and culture of the entire city.”

That sensibility runs throughout the six-track collection. The intricate instrumental sequence “Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower” and the expansive “King Solomon’s Marbles” provide space for the musicians to explore the more adventurous side of the Grateful Dead’s songwriting, while “Crazy Fingers” brings a more contemplative dimension. Elsewhere, “The Music Never Stopped” benefits from the Ensemble’s rhythmic drive, and “Sage and Spirit” and “Blues for Allah” round out a collection that balances intricate musicianship with the freedom of live performance.

The album announcement was accompanied by the release of “The Music Never Stopped,” followed by the Ensemble’s version of “Crazy Fingers” on October 30. Both recordings offer an introduction to the group’s approach, finding common ground between Detroit’s musical heritage and the Grateful Dead’s willingness to push beyond conventional song structures.

Live Dispatch Vol. 1: Blues for Allah ’26 follows the Pan-Detroit Ensemble’s 2025 debut, Groove in the Face of Adversity, released through Mack Avenue Records. That album established Was’ latest creative direction, bringing together jazz, juke-joint blues and loose-limbed funk in a celebration of his hometown’s musical character. The new live release extends that exploration while placing it in conversation with a body of work that has continued to evolve through the interpretations of successive generations of musicians.
